About the place
This is the main temple of a goddess who has been worshipped since the time before the Vedas. She is often called Arasuri Amba, which comes from the temple’s site in the Arasur hills, near where the Saraswati river starts at the south-western end of the Aravali mountain range. One of the 51 Shakti Peethas is the Ambaji mata temple. It is India’s most important Shakti Peeth.
The wind makes the red flag above the temple move in a friendly way. The temple was first built by Nagar Brahmins. It is made of white marble and has gold cones on top. The main entry is in the front, and there is only a small door on the side. This is because it is thought that Mataji, which is another name for Ambaji, has banned any other doors from being added. Around the temple is an open area called chachar chowk, where religious sacrifices called havans are done.
The doors to the inner part of the building are made of silver. In a gokh, which is a small space in the wall, an old, gold-plated limestone engraving of the Viso Yantra, a Vedic book on holy geometry that is the main focus of prayer, is set up. There is no idol of the goddess, possibly because the temple is so old that it was built before idol worship. However, the priests paint the top of the gokh so that it looks like an image of a goddess from far away.
Be sure to look across the temple, with your back to the goddess, at the other temple on Gabbar hill, which is thought to be the goddess’s original home. The main draw on Gabbar hill is the biggest mythological light and sound show in the world. The whole hill has been lit up for the show. Mansarovar is a big rectangular kund with steps on all four sides. It is not far from the Ambaji temple. Also close to the Ambaji temple is the Stone Artisan Park Training Institute (SAPTI). SAPTI is hosting a series of events called Shilpotsav. At these events, people created amazing statues that were then put up in prominent places in Ambaji, such as Gabbar Hill, Shaktipith Circle, and the Light and Sound Show venue.
In honour of Ambaji, people all over Gujarat enjoy the happy holiday of Navratri by dancing the garba around the Holy Mother. On these nine nights, bhavai theatre is also put on by the Nayak and Bhojok groups. On Bhadarvi poornima, the day of the full moon, a big fair called a mela is held here. People walk from all over the country to attend. The whole town of Ambaji is lit up because Diwali is a happy time for everyone.
